The Effects of Cocaine on Brain of Women

Recent studies have shown that Cocaine affects women much differently from the way it affects men. Harvard Medical School found that the hormonal fluctuations play an important role in women's response to drugs. Cerebral blood flow changes differently for women addicted to cocaine than to men who use cocaine. It narrows arteries and reduces blood flow to heart and brain.

According to a NIDA report, both men and women have shown the activation of right nucleus acumbens. This craving for cocain has also induced greater activation of frontal cortex and central sulcus in women and less activation of the amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, insula and ventral cingulated cortex.

Perhaps most notable was the neural activity measured in the amygdalas of study subjects, the women experienced a marked decrease in activity, in contrast to the increase observed in men. The amygdala is involved in controlling social and sexual behavior and emotions while the other part of the brain are involved in emotion and cognition.

The greater vasoconstrictive effect of cocaine in luteal- phase women may be attributable to the progesterone, which has been shown to increase cocaine's vascular toxicity. Recent researches have also shown that the affect of cocaine is different for both men and women. Women being more sensitive the affects are more and they easily get affected.

So, this has to be noted by all the women that how badly they are getting affected by this useless drugs. The amount of pleasure they offer is too low when compared to the adverse effects the drugs are showing on the women's health.
