Diet Tips for Patients Suffering From TB

Tuberculosis is a respiratory problem caused by bacteria and this disease is contagious. Symptoms of this disease are severe coughing, expulsion of sputum, increase in body temperature, fatigue, increase in circulation, respiratory problems and loss of weight. Poor sanitary conditions, ignorance, poverty and lack of hygiene are some of the factors responsible for tuberculosis.

Generally a six meal pattern is suggested for the patients suffering from Tuberculosis. In the acute stages of the disease the patients are provided with high energy and high protein diet. A full fluid diet is very useful for TB patients especially because of the poor appetite and fatigue. Small amount of animal foods are also included. Calcium rich foods provide relief from tuberculin lesions.

Cereal pulse combination is given to the patients as they provide acids required to prevent the muscle wasting. As TB effects the conversion of beta carotene to retinol, foods which are rich in retinol should be included in the diet. Foods like gooseberry, lemon, sprouts, guava and oranges provide vitamin C, which is helpful in healing the wounds. Patients should be provided with fresh fruit diet for three or four days. Pineapple juice helps to dissolve the mucus and thus helps in speedy recovery. Orange juice with honey and salt gives saline action and prevents the entry of germs, thereby protects the patients from secondary infection.

Avoid refined foods such as sugar, refined flour, canned and tinned foods, pies, pudding and refined cereals for the TB patients, also it is better not to give them strain as it effects the patient even more badly.
