Effects of Drug Abuse on Women

Drug addiction not only effects relations, careers but it also shows some physical effects on the individuals abusing drugs. Effects of drug addiction is not same in men and women. In women addiction to alcohol or prescription drugs can cause many physical problems in their reproductive organs that shows effects during pregnancy, as well as changes in mood and decision making abilities.

Menstrual Cycle:
In the women who abuse drugs menstrual cycle often becomes erratic or even the functioning of menstrual cycle stops. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), cravings for the drug often rise and fall with a woman's cycle while she is still having periods.

Pregnancy:
According to the American Pregnancy Association, drug abuse can make it harder for a woman to get pregnant and the children who are born to drug abusers will have defects by birth.

Cirrhosis:
The livers of the women can not process large quantities of alcohol and they are less functional than the men's livers, so there is more chance of death in women consuming high quantities of alcohol because of cirrhosis.

Early Menopause:
Generally in women menopause starts at the age of 45 to 55 years. But in women who are addicted to drugs this process occurs earlier and may occur in forties and even thirties according to Drug Addiction Research & the Health of Women.

Depression:
According to The Canyon rehabilitation center, women who are taking drugs or alcohol to cope up with depression are more in number when compared to men. However, the drugs and alcohol often make the depression much worse.

Women abusers are less in number when compared to men, but the effects are seen more quickly in women than men.
