Avoid Vitamin D Deficiency With Cod Liver Oil Supplements

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that plays an important role in many places throughout the body. It mainly involves in development and calcification of bones. Vitamin D enables calcium absorption by the body. It is obtained from many natural sources of food among which one is cod liver oil. Supplements of cod liver oil are essential to treat the deficiencies of vitamin D.

Inadequate sun exposure, inability to absorb vitamin D from intestines, and inability to process the vitamin due to kidney or liver disease causes disorders or deficiencies of the vitamin. More often, lack of appropriate amounts of vitamin D causes bone and muscle problems like rickets and osteomalacia. Rickets often seen in children is a disorder where inadequate levels of vitamin D causes softening and weakening of bones. Osteomalacia, is another problem that includes softening of bones with lack of vitamin D increasing the risk of falls and possible fractures. In order to avoid these problems, required amounts of vitamin D should be maintained in the body. This is ensured by right diet intake. However, the regular diet we take do not satisfy these needs and therefore, it has become necessary to take vitamin supplements.

Cod liver oil is an excellent supplement of vitamin D. This oil is extracted from the liver of cod fish and is rich in vitamins A and D, and also omega-3 fatty acids. Regular intake of cod liver oil supplements ensure appropriate levels of vitamin D in the body which slowly help in reducing the effects of the disorders. However, one should be careful when taking them in right dosage. Excessive doses of cod liver oil supplements may increase the vitamin D levels which in turn cause other complications like sore eyes, bone pain, frequent urination, etc. So, consult your doctor when having the cod liver oil supplements.
