Long-term Health Effects of Alcohol in Women

Though alcoholism has been considered dangerous, it is found to affect women more quickly than men. This means that when a man and a woman take the same amount of alcohol, woman faces the effects quicker and is also intoxicated longer than men. Alcohol generally dissolves in water. However, women body contains more fatty tissue than men and hence, alcohol gets retained in a woman's body for a longer time. So, serious long-term health effects are seen in alcoholic women.

Alcoholism in women causes various long-term health issues such as liver diseases, pancreatitis, heart problems, cancer and neurological disorders. Serious damage can occur to the liver with excessive drinking. Alcoholic hepatitis (which is an inflammation of liver) and cirrhosis (which is scarring of liver) are some of the liver diseases prominent in alcoholic women. High accumulation of fat occurs in liver. Pancreatitis or inflammation of pancreas is the other long-term health issue in alcoholic women. It includes symptoms such as weight loss and severe abdominal pain.

One of the most serious health concerns associated with alcohol usage in women is heart problem. Alcoholism can damage heart muscle and results in cardiomyopathy. They symptoms of this condition may not be seen at early stages. However, in advanced stage, symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, breathlessness and leg swelling are often seen. It is also found that excessive alcohol drinking in women causes breast cancer. Even throat cancer, esophageal cancer, mouth cancer and colon cancer may be associated with use of alcohol. Certain neurological problems such as memory loss, mental confusion and coordination problems may be seen. Excessive alcohol usage should, therefore, be controlled to avoid these dangerous long-term health issues.
