Effects of Alcohol on Dental Health

It's known that alcohol consumption causes many health effects in an individual. However, it is even considered to affect the dental health. Alcoholic individuals are uninterested or show negligence in daily and regular oral hygienic routine including brushing and flossing. This causes a common dental problem, plaque formation that is responsible for many other dental issues like gum diseases, tooth decay and tooth loss.

Unusual amount of decay or tooth loss is seen in alcohol individuals. Alcohol causes irritation of the gum, tongue and oral tissues. It even shows poor compliance in home care to obtain good oral health. Alcoholism rises the chances of periodontal or gum diseases. Even if a dental surgery is conducted for alcoholic person, he or she has a poor healing capability. It is, therefore, very much necessary to inform your doctor about your alcoholic habits when undergoing a dental surgery. The anesthesia given to alcoholic persons during a surgery is even determined by the dentist.

Heavy drinkers are often associated with ulcerations in the corners of mouth. Even gingivitis, which is an inflammation of gums, is the common problem seen in them. They often suffer from painful tongue with burns and redness of tongue. With alcohol addiction, the flow of saliva is reduced. This affects the body's protection against outside substances. As a result several kinds of oral infections and ulcerations arise. Tooth decay, periodontal diseases and oral cancer are the common oral issues faced by smokers and drinkers. Hence, it is better to stop quitting alcohol to avoid the major health issues like liver damage and also dental health issues.
