Signs of Drug Abusing Students in Schools

Illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and so on are being prominently used by majority of youth these days. This has a direct effect on their health. Also, an indirect effect on their educational career and profession is also seen. It is therefore considered important to conduct drug tests at schools, universities, and other educational institutions. However, there are even certain signs that help in detecting drug abusing students in schools. Here are some of them.

Warning signs of drug abused students in schools
  • Reduced interest in school activities and studies
  • Less involvement and participation in extracurricular activities
  • Disrespect and bad attitude towards teachers and other school faculty
  • Lack of interest in learning
  • Reduced work performance
  • No completion of homework
  • Lessened span of memory and attention
  • Decrease in the grades
  • Changes in moods and behavior
  • Being sleepy in class
  • Very less attendance
  • Involving in fighting with co-students
  • Serious problems with discipline
  • Truancy

Aggression and impatience are the common side effects of using illegal drugs. So drug abusing students mostly get irritated and involve in fighting with their friends on petty issues. Also, some may go to an extent of hurting or injuring others. This disturbs the safe environment in the institution.

So once the teachers observe the above common signs among students, they should warn them. They should also communicate with the parents to know if they are really addicted to drugs. Drug abused students also do not inform parents any of the information regarding the teacher meetings, open houses and so on. Conducting regular drug tests at schools is one of the ways to prevent students from taking drugs. Also, the students should be educated on the bad and dangerous effects of illegal drugs.
