Different Forms Of Inhalant Abuse

Individuals, who are abuse to inhalants, take substances in different forms. Huffing of household products is the most common practice, which can produce a quick high. This may look harmless to kids, but the dangers of huffing and other types of inhalant abuse are very dangerous and can cause death.

Various ways to abuse inhalants are:
  • Huffing: In this method of abuse, a rag (cloth) is soaked in an inhalant and it is pressed to mouth.
  • Sniffing: In this method of abuse, the fumes from an aerosol container are sniffed or snorted. Sometimes, an aerosol product is directly sprayed into nose or mouth.
  • Bagging: In this method of abuse, fumes from a product sprayed or spilled into a plastic or paper bag are inhaled.

Initially, huffing, sniffing or bagging creates a sense of euphoria. Abusing the inhalant for more number of times for several hours will intensify the high. For many kids, inhalants are cheap and accessible option to alcohol. As per the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in the United States, about 10 percent of adolescents (12 to 17) used inhalants at some point.
