Choosing a San Diego apartment for rent involves balance between your pocket and your needs. That is you need to balance how nice you want your apartment to be have and how much you can afford to it. Though many advices not budgeting more than a third of your income on rent, if sticking to your rent budget means living in unsafe or poor conditions, consider whether you'll need to budget more or add another roommate.
