The Effects Of Citric Acid On Teeth

In many foods such as berries, tomatoes and citrus fruits, citric acid is naturally present.   Even in processed foods and non food items, citric acid is added by the manufacturers to prevent decay and maintaining the product's pH level. Citric acid does not have a odor, but it adds a sour taste to foods.

Citric acid is available in small crystals in the form of dry that readily dissolves in water. Too much intake of citric acid is related with dental problems. However vitamins not only makes the body functioning but also it degrades the functioning of the body when it is too much consumed.

According to the American Dental Association, drinking soda which contains citric acid or excess intake of citric can erode tooth enamel which is the tooth's outer most layer. Outer shell of the tooth which covers the tooth protects teeth from the stresses caused by daily use. Once the outer shell is damaged, it doesn't grow again. Now the gaps are formed between the teeth. Through these gaps, plaque is formed underneath the tooth which leads to decay or tooth loss. Plaque is soft, sticky, and colorless substance that is continuously  forms on our teeth and gums and is often undetected. plaque attacks the teeth and gums with the acid it produces from bacteria in your mouth. The bacteria use the sugars from foods and beverages along with saliva, to thrive and multiply. It is also responsible for gum disease and contributes to bad breath because of the remains of food particles after we eat and the bacteria build up on this.

Teeth that do not contain enamel layer are brittle and sensitive to pain. Moreover, once enamel breaks down, bacteria can invade and cause decay. So, take citric acid in correct amounts. You better consult your physician for asking how much dosage is required for you because the dosage differs or varies based on the age, gender and the medical conditions you are having.
