Employee Drug Testing and Its Significance

Drug testing at workplace is an important safety issue. Employee drug tests are conducted in almost all of the Fortune 500 companies. Drug, alcohol and substance abusers have been increasing among employees. The drug usage of the employees results in absenteeism, aggressive attitude, crime and violence, and decreased turnover and productivity. This leads to the impairment of work performance and also causes problems for the safety of other employees. This further has an impact on the fame of the company. In order to decrease these effects employee drug tests are performed.

An employee drug test is performed mainly to detect cocaine, PCP, opiates such as morphine, and marijuana. The drug test includes the examination of blood, urine, sweat, or fluid samples like saliva to detect the availability of drug or their metabolites.

Employee drug tests are performed through different drug testing organizations at different locations of the companies throughout the U.S. It is found that many companies have been implementing employment drug tests to eliminate the problem before there is any problem with a drug abused employee. The drug testing is legal and according to the Drug-free Workplace Act, employers have the right to perform employee drug tests.
