How much is Moderate Drinking and At-Risk Drinking?

Generally when drinking does not cause problems for drinker or society, and which considered as low risk is called as moderate risk. Generally moderate drinking is defined in United States as

  1. If it is women no more than one drink per day.
  2. If it is man no more than two drinks per day.
  3. If it is person more than age 65 then no more than one drink per day.
A standard drink is regarded as:
  1. 12 ounces of wine or beer cooled for men
  2. 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits for women.
Generally for women and senior citizens who have age 65 is lower limit because in their bodies there is smaller amount of water than men. Because of this though they take smaller amount of alcohol they reach same concentration of alcohol in their bodies.These guidelines do not follow for Some people who should not drink at all:
  1. Women who are trying to pregnancy or pregnant.
  2. People who are operating or driving machines.
  3. People who are recovering from Alcoholism
  4. Adolescents and children
  5. People who have some diseases like liver diseases and ulcer.
Though moderate drinking is regarded as low risk related to causing problems, some times some level of damage start with first drink.
Risk drinking: Is drinking that creates a risk of developing problem and it is regarded as:
  1. If it is men then more than 14 drinks per week or more than 4 drinks per sitting.
  2. It it is women more than 7 drinks per week or more than 3 drinks per sitting.
Different individuals are affected by alcohol in different ways. Alcohol level may be affected by , gender, amount of food eaten, physical health, and any other medication or drugs taken in the blood.
