Long Term Use of Marijuana Increases the Risk of Psychosis

Marijuana is one of the popular drugs which is abused by many people worldwide. People who get addicted to this harmful drug suffer a lot in their later stages. Some latest health reports on Marijuana reflects the severity and the harmful effects of this dreadful drug.

A series of studies conducted on a group of people, which followed them for particular period showed the relationship between marijuana use and the later development of psychosis. Young adults who have used marijuana for longer period are more likely to have hallucinations and have increased risk for psychosis. These reports were published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. Previous studies also showed association between cannabis use and psychosis but this new study made it firm.

The report was submitted by a couple of Universities from Australia which studied 3801 young adults with an average age of 20. All the participants used marijuana from the past 3-6 years. They were asked about cannabis use in recent years and assessed on various out comes from its use like diagnostic interview, an inventory of delusions, and items identifying the presence of hallucinations.

The report found that when compared to the people who never had cannabis, young adults who are using it since six years were twice as likely to develop a non effective psychosis. The longer the duration since the first use, the higher is the risk of psychosis related outcomes.

The individuals who never found any symptoms for psychosis tend to use cannabis which could then consequently lead to a non effective psychotic disorder, says the experts. This way marijuana causes serious health problems in the later age.
