Counseling Helps Teens to Decrease the Use of Marijuana

Marijuana is the most popular drug which is used by many of the people irrespective of their age groups. And its is mostly among teens. In US, one third of the high school children reported that they are smoking marijuana. So, it is important part of the parents to take care of their growing child and find whether he is using any kind of illicit drugs.

Regarding the care towards kids, University of Washington's Innovative Programs Research group found a new thing which helps in changing the attitudes of marijuana using children. They published a paper in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, showing that voluntary conversation with an adult led up to 20 % decrease in the marijuana use for teenagers who frequently use the drug.

The researchers also found that teenagers have concerns about their use and they don't find a right person to solve their queries. If we feel free to explain them the pros and cons of illicit drug abuse they will certainly change their habits. The experts went to the high schools and gave some presentations about the myths and facts about the drug abuse and explained them the health and behavioral consequences after having the drug.

The experts tried it in two ways. One they gave motivational counseling for one group and educational approach which involves power point presentation of the effects of marijuana. In first case three months after counseling students has decreased their use by 20% and it still continued after one year with a decrease of 15%.

In case of educational approach, after three months of treatment there was 8% decrease in the students using it and after one year there was an 11% overall drop.

These findings showed positive results towards counseling the students and hence found effective. The study was funded by National Institute of Drug Abuse.
