Effects of Drug Addiction on HIV Patients

Drug abuse some times called as substance abuse or chemical abuse is a process which involves excessive use of the substance which leads to significant problems or distress. Any substance whose ingestion can result in a euphoric feeling is called a drug. Drug abuse induces the symptoms which resembles mental illness. The person abusing drugs neglects his responsibilities at school, work or home. Weight changes, unusual eating patterns, change in normal sleep patterns, frequent infections etc are some of the effects.

Drug users and alcohol are susceptible to getting HIV because they use shared needles for injecting the drug. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, non injection drug use can also lead to contracting the HIV virus, because drug users may trade sex for drugs or money.

Effects of Drugs on HIV Infected Patients:
The progress of diseases is more in the cases of HIV patients who use drugs, than the HIV patients who do not abuse drugs because both the HIV and drugs suppress the immune system in the body and alcohol consumption may increase host susceptibility to HIV infection. The other problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol simply would forget to take his medications. Use of the drugs by the HIV patients who have weak immune system may open them up to deadly infections and illnesses such as pneumonia, Hepatitis C and tuberculosis. Drug addiction may also worsen AIDS related brain damage and dementia. Finally, heavy alcohol consumption and drug addiction may also lead to increased rates of serious toxicity from anti retroviral therapy as both HIV and drugs can be toxic to the liver and bone marrow.
