Know About Different Types of Alcoholic Beverages

An alcoholic beverage is a drink that contains ethanol. These alcohol beverages can be divided in to three main categories which includes, beer, wine and spirits. Beer and wine are the alcohol beverages that contain lower alcohol content and these are produced by the process of fermentation. Beverages of higher alcohol content are produced by fermentation and this is followed by distillation.

Beer:
Beer is the oldest and it is the most widely used alcoholic beverage around the world. It is the third most popular drink after water and tea. Beer is prepared by a process called fermentation. In the process of fermentation the starch derived from the cereal grains is fermented. Malted barley derived form the wheat, maize, corn and rice may also be used in the preparation of the beers. There are two main types of beers, one is lager and the other is ale. Alcohol percent in the beers is usually 4 to 6 percent.

Wine:
Generally wine is produced from grapes and fruit wine is produced from fruits such as plums, cherries, or apples. For the preparation of wine, juices extracted from the above said fruits are fermented for longer times. This process also requires long aging process. Alcohol content in the wine is 9% to 16% ABV. Sparkling wine can be made by adding a small amount of sugar to the wine before packing the wine in to the bottles and this helps in the secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottles.

Spirits:
Spirits are the alcoholic beverages that are unsweetened, distilled and have alcoholic content of minimum of 20 percent ABV. For the production of spirits, the base products require to be distilled after undergoing the process of fermentation. These have high content of the alcohol because the process of distillation concentrates the alcohol.
