Coffee primarily reduces the temperature of the mouth and gums. It also restricts the blood flow to gums. A combined effect of these two issues restrict oxygen supply to gums. With this, the proper functioning of gums is affected. It may decline the gum health leading to serious gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis.

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that is enhanced by plaque formation. Upon disturbance of gum health by caffeine, there is more amount of plaque formation in between the teeth and gums leading to gingivitis. This may further cause tooth decay. Also, the plaque and tartar irritates and inflames the gums. Certain bacteria and toxins growing in the mouth cause infection to gums and they become swollen and tender. However, gingivitis can be avoided by removing the trapped plaque.

If neglected, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis. It is an advanced form of gingivitis where certain gaps are formed between the teeth and gums. It is a bit difficult to treat periodontitis. The rising gaps may loosen the teeth and they may even fall out. Gums appear shiny and are bright red or red-purple in color. They are often tender but are painless. They even bleed and become swollen. In stead of facing these serious gum diseases, it is better to avoid coffee drinking.
