Dangerous Effects of Drug Use in Teens

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), revealed some drug statistics which says that, teens are at high risk of abusing drugs and alcohol. Teens usually abuse drugs to have fun, to have a good time and be more like their friends. There will be lot of physical and psychological changes in the teens who use drugs and these drugs show many dangerous effects on the health of the teens which are listed below:

  • Drugs taken by the teens decreases their ability to pay attention.
  • Drug abuse also causes emotional problems like anxiety, depression, mood swings and these develop suicidal tendencies in them.
  • Drugs like anabolic steroids are associated with impotence in boys and men, clitoral enlargement in girls and women.
  • Drug abuse also cause irregular heartbeats, and it may increase the blood pressure, heart attacks, and other heart damages in the teen abusers.
  • Sharing hypodermic needles used to inject some drugs and the unprotected sex also increases the risk of contracting AIDS in teens.
  • Drug addiction may also cause baldness or stunned growth in the teens.
  • Drug addiction also causes chronic diseases like cancer, liver diseases, lung diseases, heart attacks and other infections in the teens.
  • Drug addiction in teens also effects the family and other relations.
  • Depending on the type of the drug taken every organ in the body is effected, for example, permanent brain damage associated with inhalants, heart attack or stroke from stimulants, halted breathing from sedatives and finally all these problems can result in death.

It is very important for the teens to be educated about these dangerous effects of drugs in order to protect their lives.
