Barcode scanner is an electronic device, and it is used to read the printed barcodes. Barcode information is captured by a device and sends it to the decoder which is called as barcode scanner. Barcode scanners have a code reader and decoder. There are different types of barcode scanners such as:
Pen type scanners: It has a light source and it has photodiode also, both are located next to each other in the tip of a pen. You can drag the tip of the pen across all the bars in steady motion to read the bar code on any product or item. Intensity of the light, which reflected back from the light source is measured by the photodiode and generates a wave form that is used to measure the widths of the bars and spaces in the bar code. Waveform is sent by the bar code reader to the decoder. Waveform is decoded by decoder and it sends it to the computer in a traditional data format.
Laser based scanners: They are another type of barcode scanners. It works as pen type barcode scanners. Laser barcode scanner use a laser beam as their light source, this is main difference. It uses a reciprocating mirror or a rotating prism to scan the laser beam back and forth across the bar code. In this a photodiode is used to measure the intensity of the light which reflected back from the light like pen type scanner.
CCD barcode scanners: It is used as an array of tiny light sensors arranged in a row in the head of the scanner. Intensity of the light is measured by each sensor immediately in front of it. In CCD reader each light sensor is small. The voltages which are measured across each sensor in a row sequentially is identical to the voltage pattern of the bar code.
Camera based barcode readers: A small video camera is used by the camera based barcode scanner to capture an image of barcode. Sophisticated digital image processing techniques are used by the barcode reader to decode the barcode.
Slight different technology is used by each barcode scanner type. Based on the convenience, any one can be used.
